Basketball Backstops
Sized to last.

Ceiling-suspended, front-fold, side-fold, and wall-mount basketball backstop systems — engineered for Michigan gymnasiums by C&M Associates.

Overview

Basketball Backstops from C&M.

Backstops are the single piece of gym equipment most likely to fail catastrophically — and the single piece most likely to hurt someone when it does. We install and service them with that fact in mind. Tempered glass backboards, motorized lifts, safety straps, and Performance Sports Systems hardware that lasts.

The Problem

What goes wrong with old backstops

Underspec'd Winch Motors

Original motors sized to backboard weight only — not the safety strap load plus the safety margin. Most fail around year 10. We size to backboard + strap + 25%.

Worn Safety Straps

Polyester webbing breaks down under UV and load cycles. Annual inspection catches it. Replacing a strap is cheap — replacing a fallen backboard is not.

Cracked Backboards

Tempered glass cracks from temperature cycling and impact. Replacement is a 4-hour job if we have the right model — we keep common spares.

Failed Locking Mechanisms

The locks that hold the backstop in the down position fail silently. The first sign is usually a backstop drifting mid-game. We test these annually.

Frequently Asked

Questions ADs ask about Basketball Backstops.

How often should backstop safety straps be replaced?
Every 5 years minimum, or any time a strap shows UV degradation, fraying, or stretching. Annual safety inspections flag them when they go out of spec.
Can you replace just the backboard without replacing the whole backstop?
Yes, in most cases. We stock common Performance Sports glass backboards and can match acrylic boards. Replacement is usually a 4-hour job, scheduled around your athletic calendar.
Do you install motorized backstops on existing manual systems?
Yes — if the structural anchoring is sound. We upgrade hand-crank systems to motorized winches with key-switch operation. Typical job is 1 day per backstop.
Are your installations covered by manufacturer warranty?
Yes. Performance Sports Systems honors full factory warranty when we install — because we're authorized dealers and the work is documented to spec.
